Holywell Bay visit -16th May

Holywell Bay has been a long time favourite beach of mine. Sitting on the North Coast of Cornwall, about 3 miles East of Newquay it’s instantly recognisable from it’s twin rocks in the bay known as Carter’s Rocks, or more commonly Gull Rocks.

The beach is National Trust property, and free to access with a large car park (NT charges apply). It’s a relatively short walk from the car park to the beach but it can be hard going over the soft sand. Thankfully there is a pub right opposite the car park with a lovely beer garden!

My assistant!

It’s always easier to navigate the dunes if you can take an assistant to carry your gear!

The South West Coast Path at Holywell Bay

If you’re feeling fit you can walk through the dunes and join the SW Coast Path, but beware it’s a steep climb! The dunes are massive and amongst the largest the UK!

On this particular visit the sun was still very high and directly above Gull Rock making a nice silhouette of the island but also creating it’s own problems. With not a cloud in site controlling the light was a little tricky and I had to rely on bracketing every shot to make sure I could create a balanced image at home.

Holywell Bay from the Sky

I was hoping to get more shots from the sky on this visit, but the sun was causing all sorts of problems for my little DJI Mini 2SE. This was a bracketed shot, but still the light was too intense for it’s little sensor.

I’ll be back up there soon, hopefully with better light!
